Im not a fan of the waiver wire idea either. My concern is for example. I have an injury to Fleury for 2 games and need to call up Bernier as a back up. He is currently ranked a 78, so I would most likely lose a young goalie who could be something special when he gets out of LA and gets his chance. I would lose him after all these years of waiting on his development because I would have uneven lines and need to call him up for the backup role To me that seems unfair and I would basically rather lose DFHL games than make a call up. To me this seems extremely unfair to my team and another would gain a great prospect for no other reason than a minor injury to one of my goalies, not actually giving up an asset or using some skill to acquire him.

You do an amazing job of missing the point. I realized I traded a number of these players and plenty are still on prospect list or farm roster. The point is I DRAFTED them and they were available to draft. If I was rebuilding as you are I would have hung to them. I'm in a position to move them to win Championships now. I know I can continue to draft good players so I dont worry about moving them. You are responsible for the prospects you have and the the fact that after 8 seasons in charge things aren't looking any better. Season after season I see improvement in almost every other roster and/or prospect pool. Bottom line, draft better and this will not be an issue. You can take whatever you want from my previous comments but look at what I came out of the season 13 draft and think about what that would have done for a re-building team. I was just giving an example that you can rebuild through the draft in a reasonable amount of time and I think i showed that, spin it how you want.

Draft - most players available are either fringe players, or too young to impact the league for at least 2 or 3 years real time.
I would agree with both of the draft solutions suggested by Brian and Dave, if it weren't for the fact that I don't see adding more picks to the draft as a viable means of helping teams to rebuild. We'd just be chipping away at an already diluted talent pool that much faster.
I disagree with you 100% on this. I am usually picking at the bottom round of every draft and I went back and looked at what I have done in the drafts season 13-18. This would give you a 3 year period (real time) on what I have compiled.
Season 13 -
Fabian Brunnstrom (NHL)
Tyler Myers (NHL)
Richard Panik ( 2nd round)
Nazem Kadri (NHL)
Jordan Caron ( NHL)
Scott Glennie ( 1rst Round)
Simon Despers (NHL)
Ryan House (3rd Round)
Carter Ashton (NHL)
Taylor Doherty (2nd Round)
Season 14 -
Jacob Josefson (NHL)
Greg McKegg (3rd Round)
Season 15 -
Brad Thiessen (NHL)
Gabriel Landeskog (NHL)
Season 16 -
Kyle Palmieri (NHL)
Ivan Telegin (4th Round)
Stephen Johns (2nd Round)
Marcus Kruger (NHL)
Zach Budish (2nd Round)
Chris Brown (2nd Round)
Season 17 -
Joel Armia (1rst Round)
Nick Shore (3rd Round)
Brett Ritchie (2nd Round)
Season 18 -
Mark McNeill (1rst Round)
Jamie Oleksiak (1rst Round)
Mark Scheifele (NHL)
Adam Erne (2013 Eligible)
My point is, the drafts are not weak or shallow, there is a ton of talent available every draft. From just these drafts I have 11 players who have suited up in the NHL and a number of other first and second rounders who make up a very promising prospect pool. There is no reason the draft can not have a team on the upswing in 3 years and possibly competitive in 5 years. The excuse that the talent isnt available or it is taking to long is invalid.

So basically you have had 7 drafts to build your roster, which I think is ample time. I would go back and look at the results of these drafts before saying that is not sufficient time to build a team. Now granted some of those who could have been drafted may have needed some time to develop but there is a huge amount of players that are already in the NHL or as Mark is you could be sitting on 2 top lines that are just developing. Point is, the results of your team are a refelction of what you have done in 7 seasons of drafting and trading, not a reflection of those teams at the top. They have every right to draft, develop and hang on to their players. The tools (i.e. the draft/ trading/ waiver wire) are all available to you to utilize to build a team, you need to take responsibility for how you use them.

I have tried to stay out of the discussion because my view points have been stated long ago and everyone knows I support anything that can bring parity to the league and not allow teams to hoard players and become powerhouses. Also I support anything we can do to have more activity throughout the season and not just coast in auto-pilot season to season, which is what I’d say about 40% of league does either because they are stuck in rebuilding mode and only are active at the draft, living life in penthouse and only try to pick off the top players for table scraps, or just overall are not active (these GMS need removed). I don't know the exact steps that we need to take, that is why I try to get everyone active with explosive topics like this thread, but anyone that thinks we are great with the status quo, in my opinion, is only thinking about themselves and just their team. We have a great league, ran by an innovative and constant progressor in Clark that allows us to have an awesome website and tools that most leagues can’t even sniff. We also have some great GM's that keep the league on our toes and make all of us think twice because a bad decision will come back and bite you, but the downward trending activity and the constant disparity between the have and have nots should be alarming to all of us. I would like to see any team, even the Sharkbitten Jets have a shot at the playoffs within 3 seasons, and have a legitimate shot at the league title after 5 seasons if they are smart and make good decisions and even be able to recover from a mistake or two. You would have a hard time convincing me that with our current rules that is possible for at least the bottom 4-5 teams even under the best circumstances(and no I do not put my team in that category for those that think I am doing this for my own team, I know I have mistakes to atone for but I should have enough of a footing to jump up if I play my cards right). The players just do not move enough, and drafting is a 3-5 year fix and with our seasons that is a 6-10 season plan, far too long in my opinion. Now, the draft age limit should help bringing down that lead time, but only after the short term drop that we are going to see in the next very watered down drafts.
To me the question really comes down to, ”Do we want to get a player that would be a top 2 line guy for one team off of the 4th line or farm team from another?” I would say yes, I would rather see a more competitive league, but I know many of you would not, or at least would not without some sort of compensation.

I understand wanting to make the league more competitive and I am for that. You hit the nail on the head here though, I dont believe it is fair to remove players from a team just because they are a good team without some form of compensation. A team should not be penalized for trading, drafting and developing well. I have no issue making trades and moving guys, but I expect to get something in return. I moved Jokinen this year for the very fact that he was buried on my 4th line and I got some good prospects back for him. He will now have a top 2 role which he should, but I shouldnt be expected to just give him away.
