I agree with 18 at the time of draft. The mid-season draft will have players that turned 18 but won't be drafted into the NHL until the entry draft.

Of course you agree with 18, it will make it easier for you to scramble last minute... to quote you!

I say at the very oldest, you gotta go 17. There has to be some risk assocciated with the pick, outside of the guy being a bust in the spot he was drafted.

I don't like the idea of imposing such a limit, for a number of reasons I've already indicated, but I'm willing to find a compromise, and I agree that 17 is probably the oldest we should go with this.

If the goal is to make it so that the teams most in need of help can draft players who will immediately help them, I think we have to go with the limit at 18.

For a player to be DFHL eligible, he has to be rated, be under contract to an NHL team, and have made his NHL debut. That last one is impossible for a 17-year-old to satisfy. The worst teams would either have to accept less talented 18-year-olds (as the more talented ones would have been picked when they were 17) or go for the 17-year-olds who can't help them for a year.

We're still going to have issues depending on the timing of our draft. If we draft in July, the DFHL first pick could be the same guy as the NHL first pick but he's still not going to be rated or have made his NHL debut by the time the DFHL season starts. If anything, the way to make it most fair would be to set the limit at 19 years old (so that anyone drafted at 18 has had time to make their debut and get rated), but I think that's taking things too far.
