The Detroit Red Wings officially announced on Monday that defenseman Chris Chelios will not return to the team next season.
"It was kind of understood last summer, after Cheli signed, that the 2008-09 season would be the last one for Cheli as a Red Wing," said Red Wings GM Ken Holland. "He wants to play another season and I believe he can still play."
Chelios, 47, played ten seasons for the Red Wings, joining the team from the Chicago Blackhawks at the 1999 trade deadline. The three-time Norris Trophy winner as the NHL's best defenseman is the second-oldest active player in NHL history behind Gordie Howe. His 25 seasons played are tied for most in NHL history with Howe and Mark Messier.

That's kinda sad, but I can totally understand why they would let him go. Hopefully he can find another team? Now some of the people on Grand Rapids will get a chance, too. I really liked the way Ericsson played

All good things mucs come to an end. You really have to admire how much heart and determination he has. He did a lot for this team over the past ten seasons. I wish him all the best, now it is time to make room for the new guys.

I can see him going back to Chicago. If not, maybe a team like New Jersey would be interested. He could go to any number of teams, but it all depends on who's interested.

yeah you saw this coming for awhile it's really to bad that the injury he took in preseason hindered him so badly but any team with a young blueline would be very intelligent to pick him up he has a veteran price tag on him but that money would be well spent for the younger kid's to learn from him i appreciate the decade of service he gave the Wing's and wish Cheli well

For some reason I could see Burke in Toronto picking him up. Cheli stays close to home, finishes his career with yet another O6 team, and the young Leafs blueline gets a mentor for a season.

Didn't think of Burke and Toronto. I could definitely see Burke making that move. Along with Chicago and New Jersey, it seems like it would be one of the most likely teams for him to end up on.
