As frequent visitors of the site can see, DetroitHockey.Net has launched a new look. This design has been months in the making and was originally intended to roll out at the start of the season but had to be put on hold.
Most of the individual pages will look much the same as they did. The new template is designed to fit more information onto a page and to put more important information at the top of the page. The information that has been moved up includes the site login box / user menu, the search form and the forum information.
Additionally, information from deeper levels of the site is now easier to access as drop-down menus have been added to the site's navigation, meaning that almost every page is accessible from any page on the site.
New functionality includes the ability to reply to news articles directly through the article itself, rather than needing to come to the forums first. Your replies will be posted to the forums for you, meaning that both blog-style and forum-style commenting is possible.
The new design comes as the second phase of a larger redevelopment project, following work to make the databases that support DetroitHockey.Net cleaner and more efficient. A third round of changes will be coming shortly, aimed at making the site forums better.

As always, great work Clark. Ya, some things may be in different places, but I'm sure we'll all learn pretty quick.

Admit it Clark, it's just a way of fitting in more google ads isn't it? Only joking, it looks good, I like the black. But the logo in the top right hand corner (both the normal one and the DFHL one) have white bits on either side, making it look a bit weird. Is that intentional? And the Mythologic computers link has an extra t in it so it doesn't work, it's currently .comt instead of .com.

Actually, part of the redesign is for fitting in Google Ads. As much as I don't want to have advertisements on the site they've become necessary. The old version of the site wasn't designed with them in mind so they were kind of just crammed in where I could put them. This version has space specifically reserved for the ads.
Thanks for letting me know about the Mythlogic typo. The logo problem is probably a caching issue on your end but since you're not the only one who would see it I think I've taken care of it. Let me know.
Also, another small update has been made to make it easier to see if you have any new PMs. An envelope icon has been added to the side of the "User Menu" section in the site header. It will be greyed out if you don't have new messages and lit up if you do.
I was going to do a comparison of the old site and the new site to show where things from the old site now are but I can sum it up as "It's all in the header now." Everything that was in that grey column of the old template is in the header of the site somewhere.

I did suspect as much, I just didn't didn't want to sound too cynical. And the logo problem is fixed, thanks.

Just a note on which browsers are supported on the new version of the site...
I specifically made an effort to make the site work with the latest browsers and made little to no effort to ensure compatibility with older ones. This blog post does a good job of explaining why:

I'm not trying to be a pain in the ass for people who are using IE 6 but really I can't see a lot of reasons not to upgrade. Plenty of free options are out there, including IE 7 and Firefox 3.
