I wanted to get a thread started where general recommendations about how to be a GM in the DFHL could be posted. Basically a place where GMs who have found that a particular method of keeping organized or keeping in touch works can post that idea to share with current and incoming GMs who might have the same problem.

This isn't anything that a GM has to do, just a list of things that might make life easier.

I'll start off with a couple but feel free to post if you've got others, or if you've got questions about anything that gets posted...

DFHL news is posted to four places. It's first posted in the forum, then I flag that post to be pulled onto the league home page. Anything flagged for the home page is available in an RSS feed. You can also opt in to be emailed when something gets pulled onto the home page (it's under the "Profile" link in the MyDH.N Menu). Because of these four options, I don't usually take the added step of sending out league-wide email much anymore. If you're not visiting the site often, I suggest either signing up for the email or adding the feed to your reader to make sure you don't miss out on anything.

One that's been suggested before for drafting... At any time of the season, when you see a player that you're interested in drafting, add him to your draft list through the GM Tools Draft Center. That way you don't have to compile one big list when the draft comes up, you can just reorder the players as necessary.

Well I haven't been a GM here, so I don't exactly know how you guys do things around here, but through experience in a number of other leagues, I've found that having at least 1 or 2 backup sets of lineups can help when you don't have time to edit lines and you have an injured player or need to make a goalie substitution...

I've also found that adding conditional selections to the draft list can help a GM to keep depth in all positions. I recently joined one league where BPA's were auto-assigned to teams that did not reach their pick deadline (3 hours), and I found myself having to adjust my list when I got a BPA (3 instances in 40 rounds). In the end, my team had a lot of depth overall because each time I got a BPA, I would make up for depth loss in other positions by using the next rounds to pick players from those positions. The basic idea though is to have a list where, say the #1 player is selected, the list skips down to maybe the #7 player, because the team already has depth in the positions of #2-6. This was basically what I was doing, only I didn't have the foresight to build such a draft list before hand.

Hopefully these suggestions help out and I hope to join you guys in the DFHL sometime in the future.

Not so much a recommendation as a "how-to" but...

You can update how your name is displayed on the DFHL site through the "Profile" link in the MyDH.N Menu. This also works for people on the waiting list, though those names aren't shown on the site.

GMs are asked to list their full real name but that's not a requirement.
